Skilled Nursing

The length of a skilled nursing facility stay largely depends on the patient’s medical condition, recovery progress, and overall care needs. For some patients, particularly those recovering from surgery, injury, or a short-term illness, the stay may last just a few weeks as they regain strength and mobility. Others, such as individuals with chronic conditions, severe illnesses, or complex medical needs, may require long-term care that spans several months or even years. Typically, Medicare covers a portion of a stay in a skilled nursing facility, but certain conditions must be met for the coverage to apply. For example, the patient must’ve had a qualifying hospital stay of at least three consecutive days immediately prior to being admitted to the facility. Additionally, the care provided at the facility must be deemed medically necessary and involve skilled services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or skilled nursing care that cannot be provided at home or in an unskilled setting. It’s important to note that Medicare coverage for a skilled nursing facility is generally limited to a specific number of days (often up to 100 days), and additional costs may apply beyond this period.
